This October, Whangārei’s Town Basin was alive with sail, song, sunshine, and community spirit – and we were delighted to be part of it. As sponsors of the Kids Zone, we hosted a clay fish painting stall that became one of the most popular stops of the weekend.
Over the two days, more than 1,200 clay fish were painted by children of all ages, creating a sea of colour and creativity along the waterfront. In the lead-up to the event, the Firebirds Pottery Group from Reyburn House generously helped us prepare the hundreds of clay fish ready for painting. During the festival, several of our agents volunteered their time at the stall – helping little artists bring their ideas to life and adding plenty of smiles and laughter along the way.
From bright stripes and spots to imaginative designs and glittery details, no two fish were alike. Some children proudly returned to show off their finished creations or to paint another one, while others carefully wrapped up their masterpieces to take home as souvenirs. The joy and enthusiasm from the kids (and a few adults too!) made the whole weekend incredibly rewarding.
The wider festival, organised by the Black Ball Maritime Society, drew tens of thousands of visitors to the waterfront. With beautiful weather, live music, heritage boats, market stalls, and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere, it was a true celebration of Whangārei’s maritime culture and community spirit.
Sponsoring the Kids Zone fits perfectly with our values – supporting creativity, community connection, and shared experiences that make Whangārei such a special place to live. We’re proud that our involvement helped bring colour, fun, and a little artistic flair to this year’s festival.
A heartfelt thank you to the Firebirds Pottery Group for their support, to everyone who stopped by to paint a fish, and to the organisers for another fantastic event.
